On 18 October, the NATO Satellite Ground Segment (SGS) Contract was signed at the NATO C3 Agency with SELEX Elsag, a Finmeccanica company. The initial contract value is GBP 37,204,353 and implementation is planned to take 42 months.
The project will rationalise and upgrade NATO’s static ground satellite communications facilities and will result in the establishment of two new multi-antenna Satellite Ground Stations in Belgium and Italy, and refurbishment of two single-antenna sites in Greece and Turkey. A range of support and contractor logistic services will be provided including provision of an enhanced training capability at the NATO Communications & Information Systems School.
The upgraded sites will significantly enhance NATO’s operational capability by improving space segment efficiency, operational availability and interoperability whilst reducing cost of ownership, and improving resilience and security. The resulting capability will provide a fundamental enabler for mounting and sustaining deployed operations and are thus an essential element of NATO’s level of ambition.
Georges D’hollander, NC3A General Manager, says
“This represents another chapter in the continuing partnering with Industry to provide the Alliance with essential capability – without Industry it would not be possible to realise these capabilities. This is a start and I congratulate Selex in winning this contract but I now look forward 42 months when this capability will be delivered.”
Phil Robinson, UK Senior Vice-President, says,
“Our UK-based team will lead an international group of specialist suppliers to deliver an affordable but enhanced capability. This will provide significant through-life cost savings and major operational benefits for the NATO C3 Agency in its activities to support Alliance operations world-wide.”
